Castlemaine - Maldon Steam Train Drive

Enjoy a drive along the back roads to the Victorian Goldfields, a trip in First Class on a heritage steam train and some time in the first "notable town" in Victoria - Maldon.

Meeting at the services McDonalds Wallan North, 1015 Hume Highway, Wallan at 9:30am for a prompt 9:50am departure (we don't want to miss the train!) we will follow one of Peter Williams' famous drive routes to Castlemaine.

There we will join the 12pm service to ride in a First Class lounge car with bar and snacks available (at your cost) behind a steam loco to Maldon, arriving at 12:45pm.

The train station is, understandably, just outside the town centre but there several lunch spots in 10 minute walk down the main street. Given the time constraints in is easier for you to make your own arrangements. 

The return train leaves at 2:45pm, First Class again, so that should allow a little bit of time to explore the town. You may want to briefly visit the Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum or the Locomotive Workshed at Maldon.

The trip home will largely be at your own discretion, so you can explore Castlemaine if you wish but we will have a route home through Daylesford and Woodend  for those who want to.

As a group we get a discounted price of $59.50 per person and we will all be allocated to the same car on the train. Registration is essential as we have to tell the railway how many seats we need. Plus, numbers for lunch will ensure we are seated together and, hopefully, served quicker.

"Ride with the driver" is a very popular experience so to make sure you can travel when you want, prior bookings are essential. Ride with the Driver experiences are only available in conjunction with a  train fare. Just remember that you must be over 16 and be relatively fit.
