Emotional roadster look combined with supersports riding dynamics - that's what the new BMW S 1000 R is all about. The Dynamic Roadster based on the S 1000 RR enters a new dimension.

"With our new S 1000 R, we have tried to preserve the strengths of its predecessor and to take into account the potentials known to us from press and customer feedback in the new S 1000 R. The team also made perfect use of the benefits provided by the new architecture"
Ralf Mölleken, Project Manager Complete Vehicle

Emotional roadster look combined with supersports riding dynamics - that's what the new BMW S 1000 R is all about. Derived directly from the supersports S 1000 RR in the key areas engine and chassis, the dynamic roadster offers the same innovative technology. The close kinship to the "RR" can be seen from every angle. With its reduction to the essentials, the new S 1000 R offers unprecedented dynamic response. Thanks to its acceleration-optimised 121 kW (165 hp) peak output combined with the unrivalled low weight of 199 kg (DIN) as well as ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), full-scale LED lighting and much more as standard, the new S 1000 R once once again sets the benchmark in the dynamic roadster segment.

Newly developed, 5 kg lighter drive based on the S 1000 RR with adapted gear ratios, optimised mid-range power and engine drag torque control (MSR) as optional extras.

The in-line four-cylinder is based on the engine of the S 1000 RR and generates 121 kW (165 hp) at 11 000 rpm. The maximum torque of 114 Nm is available at 9 250 rpm. The engine speed range was made even wider, fuller and more harmonious in terms of achieving even more improved rideability thanks to a particularly linear torque curve. In order to reduce the noise and fuel consumption levels as well as the engine speed level, especially at cruising speeds on country roads, the 4th, 5th and 6th gears now have longer gear ratios. In addition to a smoother, self-reinforcing anti-hopping clutch, the new S 1000 R is equipped with engine drag torque control (MSR) for the first time as an optional extra. The engine drag torque control prevents the rear wheel from slipping as a result of abrupt throttling or downshifting thanks to being electronically controlled.

Completely new, lighter chassis based on the S 1000 RR with Flex Frame, Full Floater Pro kinematics, underslung swingarm and optimised ergonomics.

The chassis was also subjected to significant weight reduction, just like the entire motorcycle. The frame and swingarm are based on the S 1000 RR and have been made considerably lighter in than their predecessor. At the same time, the engine in the so-called Flex Frame takes on a much greater supporting function than before. The new frame offers further benefits due to its very narrow design. This considerably reduces the motorcycle’s width in the area of the knee contact area, thereby offering a more relaxed riding position with even more freedom of movement. An adjustable handlebar clamp enables the rider to make ergonomic adaptations. Two positions are already available as standard: 0 mm / +10 mm towards the front. In addition, 10 mm handlebar riser mounts are offered as an option, which can also be turned in the direction of travel by 0 mm / +10 mm.

The underslung swingarm has been taken over from the S 1000 RR and the spring strut with Full Floater Pro kinematics is now located significantly further away from the swing axis and the engine. This prevents the engine from heating up due to waste heat and ensures even more stable temperature behaviour and even more constant damping response. In combination with the swingarm, which has its roots in motorsports, this results in more tyre grip and lower tyre wear.

Three riding modes, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and ABS Pro as standard. Optional equipment "Riding Modes Pro" with riding mode "Dynamic Pro", Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), engine drag torque control (MSR, “Engine Brake” and “Power Wheelie”.

The new S 1000 R is equipped as standard with Dynamic Traction Control DTC, ABS Pro with banking angle optimisation and the three riding modes "Rain", "Road" and "Dynamic". The fully configurable "Dynamic Pro" mode is also available with a particularly wide range of setting options as part of the "Riding Modes Pro" option. With "Riding Modes Pro", the new S 1000 R also features the "Engine Brake" function in conjunction with the engine drag torque control (MSR) and the "Power Wheelie" function. As part of the "Riding Modes Pro" option, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) additionally supports the rider during emergency braking manoeuvres.

Multifunctional instrument cluster with 6.5-inch TFT screen for excellent readability and maximum range of information.

The new S 1000 R’s instrument cluster was also taken over from the S 1000 RR. Special emphasis was placed on the best possible readability in addition to an extended range of functions and information. The screen was therefore designed to be large for good readability and optimum information display even under difficult lighting conditions. The rider can choose between customised screen displays for various purposes. The Pure Ride Screen, for example, provides all the necessary information for normal road riding, while a further Core Screen shows displays for banking angle, deceleration and traction control. A bluetooth smartphone interface which allows app-based arrow navigation is already included as standard. The TFT display is operated comfortably from the handlebars using the multi-controller. The optional M package provides a third Core Screen with bar display and lap timer.

New LED headlamp and powerful LED light units as standard. Headlight Pro with adaptive turning light and iconic light guides with daytime running light function as an optional extra ex works.

The lighting units of the new S 1000 R are based on state-of-the-art LED technology. These include the new, striking LED main headlamp with optimised low beam and high beam light. The newly designed turn indicator and rear lights also make use of LED technology. The rear turn indicators have been adopted from the S 1000 RR and feature an integrated tail/brake light function. The front turn indicators are "hidden" in the fork area. Enhanced safety when riding at night is ensured by the adaptive turning light which is a component of Headlight Pro as an ex works option. In this case, further LED modules are added. The rider benefits from improved road illumination when cornering to make riding at night even safer.

New, even more dynamic design in an attractive basic colour and two exclusive style variants.

In its latest edition, the S 1000 R also clearly borrows from its supersports counterpart, the S 1000 RR, but placing the emphasis on its character as a dynamic roadster. To a greater extent than previously, the "tail up - nose down" look gives the S 1000 R an eye-catchingly dynamic visual impact with its new body elements. The colour concept also highlights the sporty, dynamic appearance of the new S 1000 R. In addition to the basic colour Racingred non-metallic, the options Style Sport and the M package with additional product content are available.

The highlights of the new BMW S 1000 R:

    • 5 kg lighter, newly developed 4-cylinder in-line engine based on the S 1000 RR with further optimised mid-range power and rideability as well as new gear ratios in 4th - 6th gear.
    • Lightest dynamic roadster in its class: Weight reduction by 6.5 kg to 199 kg DIN empty weight or 202 kg including comfort and dynamics package. The M package reduces the vehicle weight by another 4.8 kg (2 kg with forged wheels / 3.7 kg with carbon fibre wheels).
    • Superior output and torque: 121 kW (165 hp) at 11 000 rpm and 114 Nm at 9 250 rpm.

With its powerful, dynamic single cylinder, the appearance in 2015 of the BMW G 310 R opened up the world of BMW Motorrad’s Dynamic Roadster. Quick and agile in the city, confident and powerful on the open road – as a result, the lively, purposeful Dynamic Roadster delighted many customers all over the world. In order to sustain this going forward, BMW Motorrad has made the BMW G 310 R fit for the future and afforded it a range of enhancements.

With its powerful, dynamic single cylinder, the appearance in 2015 of the BMW G 310 R opened up the world of BMW Motorrad’s Dynamic Roadster for the capacity segment under 500 ccm. Quick and agile in the city, confident and powerful on the open road – as a result, the lively, purposeful Dynamic Roadster delighted many customers all over the world, especially newcomers. In order to sustain this going forward, BMW Motorrad has made the BMW G 310 R fit for the future and afforded it a range of enhancements.

Single-cylinder engine according to EU-5 homologation with automatic idle boost, electromotive throttle controller and self-boosting anti-hopping clutch.

The heart of the new BMW G 310 R is still the reliable 313 ccm liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves, two overhead camshafts and electronic fuel injection. The cylinder inclination to the rear and the cylinder head rotated by 180 degrees with intake at the front and exhaust at the rear remain the design characteristics. This arrangement follows the logic of optimal combustion air ducting and results in a particularly compact vehicle architecture. With an output of 25 kW (34 HP) at 9 500 rpm and a maximum torque of 28 Nm at 7 500 rpm, the single-cylinder engine of the new BMW G 310 R is the ideal partner for dynamic Roadster pleasure, including in the current EU 5 homologation.

For use in the new BMW G 310 R, the engine has been equipped with a so-called "electronic throttle grip" (electromotive throttle controller) and now offers an even more sensitive throttle response. Automatic idle speed increase when starting also prevents a possible sudden stalling of the engine. The self-boosting anti-hopping clutch is also new. It reduces engine drag torque and provides a significant increase in driving safety - particularly during braking manoeuvres involving simultaneous downshifting. It also offers significantly reduced operating forces at the clutch lever.

New LED headlight and LED flashing turn indicators – seeing and being seen optimally.

Whereas the BMW G 310 R was already equipped with brake lights in LED technology, the new BMW G 310 R now has a full-LED headlight for even better visibility at night and LED flashing turn indicators for increased visibility in traffic. The new LED headlight ensures particularly bright and homogeneous illumination of the road. The three light functions high beam, low beam and – depending on the country – daytime driving light can be conveniently operated using the left handlebar controls.

Hand lever adjustable in four stages for brake and clutch.

Both, the clutch lever and the handbrake lever are now adjustable in four stages. It thus now provides ergonomic benefits – particularly for people with small hands. Stage 3 of the brake lever adjustment corresponds to the grip width until now. In the 1st position the brake lever is 6 mm closer to the handlebar.

Softly reimagined design with two attractive base colours and the exclusive "Sport" style option.

Dynamics and agility are also reflected in the design of the new BMW G 310 R. Here the visual similarity to sporty family members like the BMW S 1000 R is unmistakeable. This is also reflected in the colour scheme of the Dynamic Roadster. What all three colour options of the BMW G 310 R have in common are the engine housing covers for the alternator, clutch and coolant pump as well as footrest plate and rear grab handle, now painted in Titanium Grey Metallic.

Besides the base colour, Cosmic Black, and accentuated masculine touch, another base colour option, Polar White, is now available, which together with blue painted accents represents the traditional BMW corporate colours in a fresh, dynamic way. In Sport style with the base colour, Limestone Metallic, eye-catching red "R" graphic on the fairing side panels and red frame and wheels, the new BMW G 310 R confidently reveals its sporty side.

All new features of the BMW G 310 R at a glance:

    • Single-cylinder engine according to EU-5 homologation with electromotive throttle controller and automatic idle speed increase.
    • Self-boosting anti-hopping clutch.
    • New LED headlight and LED flashing turn indicators.
    • Hand lever adjustable in four stages for brake and clutch.
    • Engine housing covers for the alternator, clutch and coolant pump as well as footrest plate and rear grab handle painted in Titanium Grey Metallic.
    • Softly reimagined design with two attractive base colours and the exclusive style option “Sport” with red as accent colour.

2023 will see Plant Leipzig launch production of the successor to the current MINI Countryman +++ The new model will offer a choice of combustion or electric drive +++ The current investment programme for the site in Saxony will significantly increase production capacity and enable e-drive component assembly.

In 2023 the first MINI “born in Germany” will roll off the assembly lines at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. Following a decision by the BMW Group, production of the all-new successor to the current MINI Countryman will be contracted out to the facility in Saxony, making it the BMW Group’s first German site to produce both BMW and MINI vehicles. As it will be manufacturing both the combustion- and electrically powered versions of the forthcoming MINI crossover, Plant Leipzig has been the subject of an investment programme to ensure suitable expansion of its production capacity, including e-drive component assembly.

The realignment of the MINI product portfolio will see the brand strengthen its commitment to electromobility and the crossover segment, which continues to grow around the world. The successor to the popular MINI Countryman will come with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive, with highly efficient petrol or diesel engines, or an all-electric drive. BMW Group Plant Leipzig will launch production of the forthcoming generation of crossovers for the premium compact segment in 2023.

“Over the last few years, we have worked continuously to lead our plant into a successful future. This contract to produce the successor to the MINI Countryman gives us another major milestone to work towards,” says Hans-Peter Kemser, Director of BMW Group Plant Leipzig. “It is clear evidence of the company’s faith in our expertise and our site, and fantastic news for the future of our plant.”

Since opening in 2005, Plant Leipzig has constantly increased its production capacity. The latest investment programme to reach completion comprised extensions and upgrades to the body and paint shops, assembly and logistics, and totalled around €300 million. With production capacity now at more than 350,000 units per year, BMW Group Plant Leipzig has the best possible prerequisites for expanding its product portfolio to include the new MINI model.

Thanks to its extremely flexible production processes, BMW Group Plant Leipzig will be able to deliver a wide variety of drives for the forthcoming generation of the MINI Countryman. Since launching production of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer in 2014, it has become the pilot plant for BMW’s state-of-the-art front-wheel drive architecture. It currently manufactures the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, and both the front- and all-wheel drive variants of the new BMW 1 Series.

The site in Saxony is also the birthplace of BMW Group electromobility. Since 2013, it has manufactured over 200,000 all-electric BMW i3 (fuel consumption combined: 0.0 l/100 km; electricity consumption combined: 13.1 kWh/100 km; CO 2 emissions combined: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (fuel consumption combined: 0.0 l/100 km; electricity consumption combined: 14.6 – 14 kWh/100 km; CO 2 emissions combined: 0 g/km) vehicles.

In the years ahead, the team’s experience in electromobility will come to bear even more, as a further investment of more than €100 million is now adding an assembly facility for e-drive components to BMW Group Plant Leipzig. Due to go on stream as early as 2021, the new facility will make Plant Leipzig a member of the BMW Group’s international production network for high-voltage batteries. It will cover an area of some 10,000 square metres and run a highly automated process to assemble lithium-ion cells brought in from suppliers into standardised battery modules. These will then be combined to create model-specific battery packs for BMW and MINI cars. So the electrified variants of the forthcoming successor to the current MINI Countryman will be made in Leipzig and fitted with locally assembled battery modules.

    Event date: 14 November 2020

It was finally here, the BMWDCM Coffee & Cars Morning at Albert Park.

The conditions were overcast, but the day was still pleasant, with the sun making an appearance later in the morning. I didn't get to Albert Park until about midday, but Jo did mention were there a lot earlier with not only their BMW's, but also a fair few Audi's, filling up the carpark.  Until the park ranger came around to see what was happening.

Nonetheless I noticed a lot of very nice BMW's around, particularly of the M series variant. Jo and Graeme had a X7 to show off from Mornington BMW. A very spacious SUV with a twin turbo diesel engine, leather seats, wood trim, powered tailgate plus ambient interior lighting with six selectable light designs and a panorama sunroof. It is definitely a car packed with features.

As well as those members showing off the newer high-performance models there were a few of the oldies like the BMW 700 Lawrence brought from his collection, the car that saved BMW after WW2.

So it was an enjoyable day, catching up with other BMWDCM members, meeting other members I haven't seen before ,as well as seeing plenty of nice BMW's. I couldn't think of a better way to spend the first weekend out of lockdown.

Thanks to Jo, Graeme and the rest of the BMWDCM committee for putting on another great club event!

    Dear Members,

Yet another month has passed us by in isolation, but finally we are now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel! With 8 November slated as our release date, be prepared for an onslaught of event emails, as we have quite a few events that have been waiting and are ready to be released.

October started with our virtual AGM, with our current committee all re-nominating and being re-elected. Congratulations everyone, we look forward to another fantastic year ahead. Was great to see a few of you dressed in your best Oktoberfest gear.

We then followed on 20 October with a virtual tour of Mornington BMW, with Alex and Tony giving us a guided tour of the showroom and workshop and also giving us an extensive outline on how their financing works and also some great information on after sales.  Remember, if you are popping into Mornington BMW for a service or some spare parts, mention you are a member of BMWDCM and receive our special member discount.  Also, any car sales at Mornington BMW also gets a payment to BMWDCM as a thank you for our loyalty, which will ultimately benefit all our members. So if you need a new or pre-loved car or some parts, see the team at Mornington BMW and help your club at the same time.

We were hoping the restrictions would be lifted in the last two weeks of October, to allow us to do a drive day and our usual Melbourne Cup Show &Shine, but unfortunately this was not on the cards. We did manage to get our last virtual event in for the month, which was our Annual Presentation Awards night.  This turned out to be a fabulous night with lots of raffle prizes being given away, thanks to Celebrations in Clarinda and Mornington BMW, and also some very worthwhile winners (just to name a few):

    • President's award: Stephen Garth
    • Member of the Year: Angelo Caridio
    • New Member of the Year: Andrew Brown
    • Motorsport Champion: Rachael Kertes

We also had our Show and Shine class awards and Motorsport class winners awarded on the night.

November is now looking very good for us getting out and about and your committee have been working very hard on some events.  We will be starting the month with our Virtual Trivia night on 10 November, then a Welcome Back to Melbourne,Coffee n Cars morning at Carousel, Albert Park on Saturday 14 November. On 15 November the Alfa Club is holding a club sprint day at Winton, which is nearly full.  If you're interested in entering, please email motorsport@bmwdcm.com.au and we can get some entry forms to you.. On 22 November is our Welcome Back Picnic Drive, along some of Melbourne’s beautiful roads.  Our final event for the month will be our Annual Show & Shine at the Park Hyatt, on 29 November.  This will be a fabulous event at one of Melbourne’s best Hotels, so register early as to not miss out. We are limited to the number of cars we can display, so get in early! The Park Hyatt is also doing a special deal for us to stay the night, with breakfast and valet parking included, if you’d like a special night in town after being locked up for so long.

Please remember social distancing and face masks will be required at all of our events, going forward, as well as any other government requirements in place at the time.

On the topic of sprints, the committee have decided that since, due to Covid 19, we have only run two events so far and there is only the possibility of one more of our calendared events this year, we will cancel the Drivers’ Championship for 2020 and start afresh for 2021. This means there is no pressure on anyone to get to the remaining event/s and if you do, you can just go out and have some fun.

With the borders still closed we aren’t able to do Bathurst, but Phillip Island on 6 December with AROCA is still on. We considered trying to make the sprint on the 15 November at Winton part of the Drivers' Championship and then Phillip Island and try and squeeze a Hillclimb in before the end of the year to make at least 5 events, but decided it is best to just enjoy what we can for the rest of the year and not put any extra burden on any one. We hope you agree.

December will have a few events on as well and then right through January and hopefully back to a more normal year next year. We are working on next year’s calendar for events and motorsport already, and as dates and events are confirmed we will release them as we can. I can say that it is looking good for a return to the Formula 1 Grand Prix in March, hopefully with spectators and a club display as per a normal year. I am in contact with the Australian Grand Prix Corp and Motorsport Australia regularly, so as soon as I know anything you will hear too. Keep your fingers crossed that by March we can be almost back to normal.

The re-starting of physical events does not mean we are not still being careful, with social distancing, face masks and other covid-safe plans in place for all events, we will still ask you all the wear your mask, sanitise and also have your COVID-safe app on when you are at all of our events.  We have all been so good, worked so hard and been patient through these dreadful months, we don’t want to go back again, so please comply with anything we ask, for our sake and yours.

A little bit of happy news, for those who joined us for the Munich Virtual Tour, with our wonderful friend Eva Priller as host, I would like to let you all know that she is now Eva Moga.  Eva and Michael were married on 24 October and we are so happy for them both and wish them much happiness for their future lives together.

We are also in the planning stage for our edition 3 of idrive magazine and would like to ask anyone with any interesting stories that they would like to share with us, please contact Jess, our editor via email to editor@bmwdcm.com.au and see if you can get your story in our wonderful annual magazine.

Member of the Month is also still running, so if you are interested in sharing your vehicle with us, click here.

Very much looking forward to seeing everyone again soon, take care and drive safe.

Do you work on it yourself? Yes

Generally, what do you love about it? I love the way the car feels on the road, in the corners, the acceleration and the sound of the car. It was built to drive and built to withstand anything thrown at it, and it lives up to the build intention!

If you had to pick one piece of it that you just love to look at, hear or touch, what would it be and why? I just love the custom sports seats I have in my car, Standard E30 Sedan sports seats but clad in Alcantara and leather to my taste. Very grippy and comfortable.

Tell us about the best drive you've had in it. The best drive in Dirty would have to be one of the track days at Sandown, I busted a power steering hose in the sighting laps, so I missed the first timed session as I was fixing the high pressure hose. I joined the rest of the cars for the second session and the car ran flawlessly for the rest of the day, I ran my fastest time that day and just loved how reliable and robust the car felt.

What about the worst drive? Why? In October 2019, I took a Friday off work to do a performance driver training day at Sandown. Car was the slowest one there, and I was in a group full of Porsche RS, GT3, Nissan GTR etc and I completely blew my clutch to pieces trying to match these other cars. I ended up snapping the piston of the clutch master cylinder and seized the slave cylinder as well as stripped the clutch disk. The car was towed home to be fixed, sad and expensive day out.

Any improvements/modifications/restorations planned? I am currently trying to sell my car to raise funds for an E31 850i I have found, so no further mods are needed to my car. It really only needs a couple of little things like OBC lights and some paint chip repair, sunroof bracket is broken and and a couple of switches to be replaced.

In two words, how would you describe it? Dirty Thirty

Is there anything else about your car that is of interest (i.e previous celebrity owner, raced, a show winner, limited number in Australia)? Sadly, my car has no exciting history behind it, other than it sat in a garage for about 7 years and wasn't even looked at during that time just prior to my ownership.

Thanks for sharing with us Shane!  If you'd like to share your car (or motorbike!) with us, click here to submit your car or bike for next month!

    Event date: 20 October 2020

Last night's Zoom Meeting with BMW Mornington was great.  I did sneak out for 15 minutes to take some sunset photos, I'm a photography nut as well.

I live in Mornington and had been driving my 2008 Mazda 6 for 12 years, 253 000km on the clock and hadn't missed a beat.  I was going to drive it into the ground but I knew I was missing out on some of the whistles and bells the more modern cars had.

Eventually, I thought, damn it, I'm upgrading.  I drove a couple of Mercs.  A C65S - WOW! did that thing go, but too many $s.  I drove a C300 and used self-parking and nearly had a heart attack.  Very smart technology but scared the living daylights out of me giving up total control [that by the way is the title of a great song by The Motels], but it not only had located the parking spot, but placed it in the area with great flare and panache.

I then popped into Mornington BMW and took a 400 series for a spin.  I liked it.  I was then shown a 428i Gran Coupe but couldn't drive it because the dealership didn't own it at that stage.  Looked great.  They said they'd call me when it was available.

In the meantime, I came across a 2015 428i M Gran Coupe on Car Sales.  You shouldn't get behind the wheel of a car like that unless you're prepared to buy it.  Comfortable, super smooth, quick if needed and looks smoking hot.  That was in March this year; the car had 4 500km on the clock!  it was garaged AND covered, so the owner obviously loved the car but hardly ever got behind the wheel. I scratched my head and asked the owner, 'Why the low Ks?'

'I'm busy with my business, I just take it out at weekends.'

    Really!

    'Why did you buy it?'

    'For the buying experience!'

That was a $100K buying experience.

Black, unblemished and practically brand new.  I probably paid a bit more than I should have, but it was too good to give up.  I've loved every km I've driven since.  Which hasn't been as many as I'd liked to have racked up, for obvious reasons.

Alex Rowell at Mornington BMW who gave me my first drive in a Beamer had told me that BMW was the best driving experience you'll have.  I strongly suspect he's right.

So I'd bought this beast, now I needed to insure it.  Went through the existing providers and then checked in with Tony Traikovski, the Business Manager and his price was competitive and if the worst happened, it would be rebuilt to original BMW build specs.  That I liked.  I knew that wouldn't happen with the run of the mill insurers and the price was very competitive.  Done!

    'I'll take it thanks Tony.'

Then my son-in-law who along with my daughter both drive German cars that start with A.  He suggested extended warranty wasn't a bad idea and put me in touch with a provider that he'd used.

I went through their options; a labourious task to put it mildly and a multitude of options to consider.  Plus, there was a 3 month waiting period before you'd be eligible to claim.  Really?  This is not health insurance and I'm unlikely to get pregnant.

That guy Tony and Mornington BMW did a good job on the insurance and we had discussed extended warranty earlier on but that was also provided by a third party.  So back to Tony I went.

To cut a long story short, once again the price was competitive and secondly there was no waiting period and Mornington could approve my car, even though it was purchased privately.  Done!

Another successful transaction, and I walked away with a 3 year extended warranty at a price I was very comfortable with.

One other experience that impressed me was when I purchased new wiper blades from Spare Parts.  Not only did they take my money, but they also had one of their apprentices come out to the car with me and fit them then and there.

'Nice,' I thought.  They've gone that extra mile.  They did something they didn't have to do, but once again, it impressed me.

One thing that you don't come across very often these days is, GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE.  It's not rocket science, it's just common sense.

Do you think I'll be going anywhere else for my gorgeous 428i M's needs?  Nup.  They've done everything right so far.

They've got the customer service focus that everyone loves to experience, they're competitive and easy to deal with.

Stylishly coordinated design features underscore the visually expressive character of the two high-performance models in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé segments – Orders now open for the special-edition cars; production limited to 250 examples of each model.

Supreme power, an imposing thirst for forward progress and extravagant styling allow the new BMW X5 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.0 – 12.8 l/100 km [21.7 – 22.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 296 – 291 g/km) and new BMW X6 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.1 l/100 km [21.6 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 301 g/km) to carve out a unique place for themselves on the world’s roads. Their performance attributes set new standards and now they are also raising the bar once again in terms of exclusivity. First Edition specification accentuates the effervescent and distinctive character of the BMW M models in the luxury Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) segments to particularly stylish effect.

Precisely coordinated design cues for the exterior and interior lend the special-edition takes on the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition the status of intoxicating rarities at the high-performance reaches of their respective segments. Their air of exclusivity creates the ideal environment in which to enjoy the unmistakable driving experience laid on by a high-revving V8 engine with two turbochargers and 460 kW/625 hp, M-specific suspension and M xDrive all-wheel drive. The two special-edition newcomers will be produced at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the US in a limited run of 250 examples each and can be ordered with immediate effect.

The BMW Individual Frozen Dark Silver special paint finish available exclusively for the special-edition models showcases the exterior design of the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition to extremely impressive effect. This matt paint finish ensures the muscular proportions, clear forms and signature M details of the body design come authentically to the fore, regardless of how the light hits the car. The two special-edition cars can also be specified with the BMW Individual Frozen Marina Bay Blue special paint finish. This exterior shade is one of the BMW special finishes now available ex-factory for the BMW X5 M Competition, BMW X6 M Competition, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. These special paint shades are increasing in number all the time.

The high-quality paint finishes team up with M light-alloy wheels in star-spoke design with a Jet Black, high-gloss finish available exclusively for the special-edition models. The wheels (front: 21-inch, rear: 22-inch) are fitted with mixed-size tyres. The exterior styling also includes selected body elements made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Like the M Carbon exterior mirror caps for the two special-edition models, the M Carbon rear spoiler for the new BMW X6 M Competition has an understated feeling of the race track. An M Carbon engine compartment cover is likewise part of First Edition specification.

BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in exclusive bi-colour Silverstone/Midnight Blue ensures the interior and BMW Individual paint finishes fit together neatly. Black Alcantara inserts in the seat bolsters and contrast stitching in Sakhir Orange emphasise the sporting contours of the M multifunction seats. The eye-catching contrast stitching also bring distinctive flourishes to the door panel trim and instrument panel. Taking its cue from the leather-covered instrument panel, the BMW Individual headliner in Alcantara is likewise in Midnight Blue.

The high-tech and extremely lightweight material CFRP also features in the interior of the special-edition models. Adornments include Carbon Fibre interior trim strips available in a special, market-specific design. The silver-coloured “First Edition 1/250” lettering – which is applied to the carbon-fibre strip before the clear coat seal – highlights the exclusive character of the special-edition models. If these interior trim strips are specified, the model badge on the cover for the cup holders has the same design.

For more than four decades, the BMW Motorrad abbreviation “RT” has been synonymous in the world of dynamic touring motorcycles. To ensure that this continues to be the case in the future, BMW Motorrad has made extensive changes and innovations to the new R 1250 RT.

"We have given the R 1250 RT a new look, a comprehensive increase in standard equipment and numerous technical upgrades to achieve a whole new riding experience. As a dynamic tourer with the incomparable BMW ShiftCam engine, it also has the perfect power unit with impressive power across the entire speed range”
    - Harald Spagl, Project Manager

The new BMW R 1250 RT: The benchmark among dynamic tourers is even more sophisticated and innovative for maximum motorcycle enjoyment on extended journeys.

For more than four decades, the BMW Motorrad abbreviation “RT” has been synonymous in the world of dynamic touring motorcycles, combining comfort on long journeys with dynamic riding pleasure on country roads. More than that: a BMW RT has always sets the benchmark in this class. To ensure that this continues to be the case in the future, BMW Motorrad has made extensive changes and innovations to the new R 1250 RT – for even greater riding pleasure and touring enjoyment at the very highest level. As before, the legendary 2-cylinder boxer engine ensures comfortable travel and dynamic propulsion. It still has an engine capacity of 1 254 cc and delivers 100 kW (136 hp) in the current EU5 registration, too. Thanks to BMW ShiftCam technology for varying valve timing and valve lift on the intake side, it offers superior power across the entire speed range, extremely smooth running and refinement as well as outstanding fuel consumption and emission values.

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and new “Eco” riding mode as standard. Riding Modes Pro with riding mode preselection and engine drag torque control (MSR) as options.

The standard Dynamic Traction Control DTC ensures a high level of riding safety due to excellent traction, while the new standard “Eco” riding mode helps the rider achieve the best possible fuel efficiency.

The new R 1250 RT Adventure can be fitted with the “Pro Riding Modes” as an ex works option. Another new component of Riding Modes Pro is the engine drag torque control (MSR): this can be used to safely avoid unstable riding conditions that can occur during coasting or downshifting due to excessive brake slip at the rear wheel.

New BMW Full Integral ABS Pro as standard.

In its latest edition, the R 1250 RT is equipped as standard with the new BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS Pro. This is a braking system in which both the hand and foot brake levers are used to apply the front and rear brakes simultaneously. Combined with the qualities of ABS Pro with banking angle optimisation and dynamic brake force distribution, Full Integral ABS Pro is the perfect braking system for a touring bike such as the R 1250 RT.

New full LED headlamp with turning light and new light functions as ex works options.

The new standard full LED headlamp already illuminates the road with unrivalled brightness and clarity. The new headlamp with swivel function goes one step further: with the “Adaptive Turning Light” option, the dipped beam of the standard full LED headlamp turns into the bend according to the banking position. In this way, the bend is almost fully illuminated because the light moves to where the motorcycle is heading. Thanks to new light functions, the riding experience on the new R 1250 RT is even more intense – and there are practical benefits, too. For example, the “Welcome” function, the “Goodbye” function for taking leave and the “Follow me home” function for guidance purposes will be available as optional extras in future.

Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) as standard. Active Cruise Control (ACC) – cruise control with integrated distance control for relaxed touring as an ex works option.

In connection with the standard Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) , “dynamic” means that the preselected speed is kept at a constant level when riding downhill. If the braking effect of the engine is not sufficient for this, the fully integral brake is automatically activated so as to maintain the desired riding speed. Active Cruise Control (ACC), available as an optional extra, goes one step further. Thanks to radar sensor technology, it enables relaxed gliding with distance control – and there is no need for the rider to adapt road speed to the vehicle in front.

New 10.25” TFT colour screen with integrated map navigation for convenient route planning and extensive connectivity as standard.

The new R 1250 RT is fitted with a 10.25-inch TFT colour screen with integrated map navigation and connectivity. Its excellent readability, clear menu navigation and highly integrated operating concept put the new R 1250 RT at the top of the range of serial production motorcycles. For the first time on a motorcycle, the new 10.25-inch colour screen makes it possible to display a navigation map in the instrument cluster, so no additional display is needed.

Along with the introduction of standard connectivity and the navigation map shown on the screen, the new “Comfort telephony with extended smartphone connection” option is available. A smartphone can be securely accommodated in a storage compartment that is protected from splash water and ventilated by an electric fan, and its battery can be kept ready for use inductively or via USB connection. With the Audio System 2.0, the new R 1250 RT offers an even more intense sound experience than its predecessor.

The new R 1250 RT: enhanced travel capability and dynamic performance thanks to new fairing. Exclusive touring character in an attractive basic paint finish and refined style variants.

Thanks to a newly developed front fairing, the new R 1250 RT now not only looks fresher and more dynamic, it also has enhanced travel and touring qualities thanks to additional aerodynamic advancements. Not only does the new front fairing enclose the new full LED headlamps, for example, but the upper section of the fairing is now reduced in height, too. This results in a wider field of vision for the rider, while at the same time making the new R 1250 RT appear lighter and more dynamic. In addition to the attractive basic version in Alpine White 3, the new R 1250 RT is also available in the refined Style variants “Elegance”, “Sport” and “Option 719”.

The highlights of the new BMW R 1250 RT:

    • Authentic boxer engine with BMW ShiftCam Technology for variation of the valve timings and valve stroke on the intake side.
    • Powerful response across the entire engine speed range, exemplary fuel consumption, emission levels, running smoothness and refinement.
    • Output and torque: 100 kW (136 hp) at 7 750rpm and 143Nm at 6250rpm.
    • Knock sensor system for optimised travel suitability.
    • New BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS Pro as standard.
    • Three riding modes as standard.
    • New “Eco” riding mode for particularly economical riding as standard.
    • Riding Modes Pro with additional riding mode “Dynamic” and new engine drag torque control (MSR) as an ex works option.

    • New LED headlamp as standard and new full LED headlamp with adaptive turning light as an ex works option
    • Connectivity: New multifunctional instrument cluster with 10.25-inch full-colour TFT screen and numerous other features as standard.
    • New “Comfort telephony with extended smartphone connection” option.
    • New Audio System 2.0 option.
    • New double tone fanfare as standard.
    • Intelligent Emergency Call as an ex works option.
    • Attractive basic paint finish along with the three Style variants “Elegance”, “Sport” and “Option 719” as ex works options.
    • Extended range of optional extras and Original BMW Motorrad Accessories.
